Invasive Species

2024

The ‘Invasive Species’ body of work illustrates how industry and buildings have transformed the Antipodean landscape with mines, highways and petrol stations.

The first images of the trees and water were made using a film camera. The film was then rewound and overlaid with photographs of Brisbane, a city of Colonial-era buildings and modern skyscrapers.

This multiple-exposure approach means each image is an accident whilst being exactly as it was planned. A metaphor for the experiment we are inflicting on planet Earth. The results of our building and polluting are completely unpredictable whilst also being exactly as we intended.

As the Invasive Species images were edited and organised something unexpected emerged: evidence of nature fighting back and degrading the buildings of today which may become the lost civilisations of the future.

I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Brisbane and the surrounding areas where this work was made. The Yuggera, Turrbul, Yuggarrapul, Jinabara, Quandamooka and neighbouring clan groups.
